Hamburg – the city and its vast port

Hamburg is best known for its famous port, taking up a one hundred square kilometre area between two rivers. Hamburg will also pleasantly surprise its guests with numerous unique looking bridges, parks and other architectural objects, as well as art galleries and museums.

How to travel?

If you’re looking for a flight from Lithuania to Hamburg, you will have to buy a connecting flight ticket. Hamburg airport is located 8 kilometres away from the city centre, which can be reached using a train, in 25 minutes time. Trains are the most comfortable public transport means for travelling around the second biggest German city of Hamburg. Naturally, even more interesting tourist attractions await those who will also travel on foot.

What to taste?

Hamburg is one of the main German port-cities. Naturally, here you can taste numerous fresh fish and seafood dishes. One of those is the traditional Hamburg dish of fish with grilled potatoes, onions and other vegetables, as well as mustard (Pannfisch). Probably the most popular soup in the city is the creamy lobster soup, flavoured with whipped cream and dill (Hamburger Hummersuppe). As usual in Germany, no dish is offered without a mug of light, dark, or white German beer.

What to see?

Hamburg has many architectural objects that await curious looks of tourists and flashes of their cameras. One such object is the neo renaissance city town hall building of 647 rooms, available to see every year on the Night of Museums. The most famous in Hamburg is St. Michael’s church, called the best Hanseatic Protestant baroque church. After climbing to the 132 metres high church tower, you will be able to see a beautiful panoramic view of the whole city, including its massive port. Another peculiar city object is the biggest world’s railway models’ Miniatur Wunderland museum, with 890 railway models and 12 000 metres of train tracks on display.

What to do?

The most romantic way of visiting Hamburg is booking a ship cruise around Hamburg’s port, starting in Landungsbrücken station. After seeing all famous city sightseeing objects, do not forget to pay a visit to art museums and galleries as well. Especially worth your attention, is the Kunsthalle art gallery, which has numerous Dutch, French, and German artists’ works from 16th to 19th century on its display. Definitely visit the Historical Museum of Hamburg, along with the International Maritime Museum. Get a closer look at ancient traditions Germany by visiting the world’s largest Ohlsdorf cemetery-park, which is where many victims of the Second World War were buried.
